Merlees was born on the island of St. Kitts on February 27, 1940 to Josephine Richards and William Brown. She grew up in Trafalgar Village in a large family. When Merlees was a toddler, her mother Josephine gave her the name “Baby Doll” because she was so cute as a Doll. The name “Baby Doll” was later shortened to Bea which she was affectionately known as over the years. Family was always important to Bea, as a young mother with little resources she made many sacrifices to provide a better life for her children and extended family. In 1967, Bea emigrated to the Virgin Islands to secure a better future for her children. Throughout the years in St. Thomas, she was able to elevate the living standards of her children and subsequently gave them the opportunity to move to United States territories Virgin Islands. In 1970, Bea got married to Joseph Lewis Vanterpool and they later had a son. In 1975, the family moved to St. Croix where she was able to establish a home to bring her other children from St. Kitts. Some years later, Bea moved to the United States where she was recently permanently residing in the Miami Area. Bea was a resilient woman, who was quiet and kind.
