A famous author once said, “Family is not an important thing, it’s everything”. That statement epitomizes Lary T. Modeste and the love he had for his family. Lary was born in Arima, Trinidad and raised in Arouca. In his youthful years, he attended St. Pius Boys RC Primary School in Arouca and later Holy Cross College in Arima. He had natural athletic ability that allowed him to excel at basketball and soccer. However, he lost interest in pursuing the sport at a national level with the untimely death of his younger brother (Dave) in 1988. In 1987, Lary’s first child (Carlesha) was born from a relationship he had with Charmaine. He always became very emotional when he spoke about Carlesha. Her existence gave him the motivation to be a more responsible and constructive adult. Lary was introduced to the electrician trade during his mid to late teens by his uncle. Alfonzo “Fonzo” Hull. Under uncle Fonzo’s guidance, he learned the trade well and thrived. He mastered this skill over the years and continued in this profession until prior to his death. When Sherryann visited Trinidad in 1991 to participate in a netball tournament, a mutual friend introduced her to Lary. Their friendship quickly blossomed even though they only saw each other once a year at Carnival time. They would talk on the phone about any and everything for hours. This was way before phone cards and WhatsApp. Dirty mas and brass fete played a pivotal role in sealing their friendship. Sherryann admitted that together, they gave new meaning to the United Sisters’ infamous song “Whoa Donkey”. Lary migrated to Florida, USA in 1996. He and Sherryann married in 1997 and the family expanded with the arrival of his 2nd daughter [Zaria (1997)] followed by his son [Darius (2001)]. When Carlesha migrated to Florida to join the family in 2003, he now felt that all the pieces were finally in place. Lary wore many hats in his later years. He developed a joy of cooking. Sherryann recalls he would call his aunts for cooking tips. They would be proud to know that he held his own in the kitchen and made quite a name for himself among friends and family. Lary’s signature dish was a wicked corn and/or pigtail soup. Hence, he was affectionately called “soup man” by many of his friends. He also wore the hat of resident DJ. He was an amazing host, knew the exact song to play, the right time to play it and was always planning the next lime. He simply loved music and curated quite a music library over the years. His love for jazz and 80’s & 90’s music was only trumped by his love for steelpan. Trinidad Massy All Stars could do no wrong in his eyes. Hence, he proudly wore his “All Stars Forever” t-shirt. Lary was a devoted, compassionate and caring husband, father, grandfather, son, grandson, brother, nephew, uncle, brother-in-law, and friend who endured unspeakable pain to extend his time here on earth with his family. He fought to the end but ultimately lost his battle with cancer and expired on August 28, 2023, at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL. He was 60 years old. Lary was well loved and embraced for who he was, and he will be sorely missed. Gone too soon but his memory will forever be etched in our minds and upon our hearts. We will see him again.
