Gary Lionel Caraway’s life began on March 7, 1944 at Orange Memorial Hospital in Orange, New Jersey, the eldest son, with four siblings to Irene Caraway. He grew up in Orange and East Orange where he attended Orange High School. Upon graduation, Gary joined the United States Army from 1965-1968 and fought in the Vietnam War. After honorably serving his country, Gary enrolled in Bloomfield College for Financing. In 1978, Gary married Rochelle Caraway and from that marriage raised four children that he adored. In 2001, Gary married Dorothy Caraway, who preceded him in death. Gary held various jobs over the years but found his career with Saint Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, New Jersey in the Maintenance Department. Gary held the office of Union Representative for the local union 1199J and took tremendous pride speaking for his fellow co-workers. Gary was a loving and giving person that took tremendous pride in his family and enjoyed being the life of any party gatherings. In addition to being a great dancer, Gary was known as “The Great Storyteller” where he would spin tales about his talent for picking winning lottery/Pick-it numbers- a gift he inherited from his mother Irene. Gary is preceded in death by his mother Irene Caraway, sister Darlene Hunt and wife Dorothy Caraway.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted life partner (Our angel) Claire Crocker and his four children: Keith Brown of New Jersey,Tracy Howard of New Jersey, Rashid Caraway (Dina) of North Carolina and Garrett Caraway (Amanda-deceased) of Florida; his sister Barbra Fried Fearrington (Ronald) of North Carolina, sister Tammy Douglas (Bert) of Florida. He also leaves behind grandchildren: Caprice Howard, Alyshia Howard, Desmon Pamplin, Jonathan Silver, Ciarri Caraway, Kimberly Caraway; Great grandchildren: Jamir Campbell and La’Rizo Howard; Nieces and Nephews: Kariem , Shakera, Natasha, Kasseem, Samad, Nakia and a host of great nieces and nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
